Finding My Inner Voice: How I Discovered the Connection Between My Thought Processes and My Cancer

ENCORE PRESENTATION:   Christine Rodek-Comninel is a cancer survivor who discovered something affecting her health that may help others with cancer.  After her oral cancer recurred twice, and being told that her children would be orphaned one day in the not too distant future, she discovered that the well-being work of yoga, eating healthy, and meditation, while helpful, wasn't enough on it's own.  There was an "inner" component that was missing.  When she discovered and applied it, the results were surprising and she is six months away from being declared cancer free.

Sam Is Stuck:  A woman teaches her 8 year old son with dyslexia, to enjoy reading.

Dyslexia denies children the opportunity to fully discover and fall in love with reading.  Their confidence suffers as reading attempts end up with frustration, pain and tears. Cigdem Knebel's 8 year old son is a bright kid. His inability to read hides this.  His low-level reading vocabulary has limited him to low level context books which, while suited to his reading level, are not suited to his intellectual level.  He's capable of processing a higher context chapter book, if only he can read the words.  Her desire to help her son motivated Cigdem to discover a way to write chapter books that are low vocabulary level and high context that he can read and enjoy, resulting in a level of increased self-confidence that so many dyslexic children lack due to their inability to read.  Meet Cigdem and hear her story as she discusses her first children’s book, Sam is Stuck, which is due to come out this month.

You can visit Cigdem's organization, Simple Words Books at www.simplewordsbooks.com.

Meet Billy Brett. Billy is the closest thing we have to a real superhero. A decorated Fairfax County Motorcycle Cop (he was awarded a medal of valor in 2003) and Author of "Billy's Never Ending Battle: Creating a wonderful life with imagination and purpose" (his autobiography), Billy shares with us his own inspiring story of how he went from a "hyper kid", then a troubled young man who couldn't stop screwing up, to a successful cop who is only slightly short of being the real Superman. How does a man with Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) go from what felt to him and his family as a sure-to-be-failure with a history that included an irresponsible car wreck and a series of behaviors that continually got him in trouble, to a star recruit in the police academy and ultimately a successful and quite loved police officer by the community he serves? What is it that makes him almost a real-life Superman? Find out.

The Genderbread Man

Meet "self-made man" Tony Ferraiolo.  A man with a story about transition and triumph.  Born into a life that is quite different from what most of us can imagine, Tony will inspire you, educate you, challenge you, and make you laugh as he shares his story.  Tony is a Life Coach who works with Transgender teens and their families.  A Trans man himself, Tony's is a story of self-realization, personal struggle, blatant discrimination from the medical community that was supposed to help him, and ultimately a transition to a life of service to others, teens and their families, experiencing the same pain.

Check out the documentary film on his life, "A Self Made Man", a film by Lori Petchers that takes a candid look at what it means to be transgender, told through an intimate portrait of Tony.  http://5efilms.com/films/self_made_man.html

Two Men, A Set Of Twins, and a Restaurant: Interview with Farid Ali and George Constantinou, two proud fathers of their twin children

As the US continues to move to the correct side of history on the issue of marriage equality, so many inspiring stories are emerging.  Meet George and Farid.  A couple with a wonderful story about their relationship and their children; two twins each of whom is the biological child of one of them.  Featured last month on HBO's "Bed crumbs", they talk about their relationship, their kids, their lives.  As Arnold Wayne Jones of DallasVoice.com says, "When Farid tears up talking about the children, you’re touched by the depth of their feelings."  I'm so inspired by their life together, their family, the restaurant they own together, and more, that I just HAD to interview them on my show.
